Coming in October

By Reef and Trail

by Fisher Ames Jr.

Step back to a time before highrises lined the beaches of Florida--an era when most of Florida's interior was virtually unpopulated, and its coast hosted only a string of small villages. Wildlife abounds, and subtropical habitat sets the stage in this story, while sandy roads, shady hammocks, wetlands, lagoons, barrier islands and warm salt water serve as a backdrop.

Follow Bob as he grows from a "cracker" lad in the interior to a young man of the coast and keys. Bob learns the ways of the wildlife in the state's interior, and moving to the coast adapts himself to coastal life, becoming proficient at fishing and sailing. Above all, Bob is a lover of nature and is always striving to know it better. His appreciation of the Florida folk and their ways leads him to treat each person he meets with dignity and respect, while he displays integrity and wisdom, often missing from those much his senior.

And what would a story of the old Florida coast be without a quest for pirate treasure?—making for a rousing adventure for young and old alike, and provides another showcase for Bob's uncanny knowledge of his environment. Includes Glossary and "Outdoor Advice" from the 1909 Edition!

Lost Classics is bringing back great educational books that have lain forgotten for too long on  library and used-book store shelves. We believe that building character should go hand in hand with children's education. With this aim we are reviving these books from the late 19th and early 20th centuries that teach and entertain while encouraging virtues like love of country, service to others, self-discipline, honesty, and honor. In a world that worships the new, we are resurrecting the values of an earlier, more enduring America, free from the modern trappings of "political correctness" and "revisionism." Our mission is to republish the finest textbooks, readers and historical novels of the past.

We offer the popular Eggleston American history series that covers ages 6 and up. The last book in this series, A History of the United States and Its People, sold out its first printing in six months. This book is a thorough coverage of American history up to 1900 that has sold well to adults as well as youths. Our English grammar titles from Emma Serl have required second and third printings to keep up with demand. Prominently featured in Laura Berquist's book, Designing Your Own Classical Curriculum, these texts have been received well and are often the topic of conversation in homeschool discussion groups. A wonderful biography of Kit Carson, with actual excerpts from John Fremont's journals, rounds out our non-fiction list.

Our fiction titles have been led by the adventure stories of G. A. Henty, a once wildly popular author who's stories lined most Victorian boys' bookshelves, but whose works have somehow been forgotten until recently. These books are not merely entertaining, but accurately present real  historical events and periods in a way that grab a child's (and even adults') attention and encourage them to further investigation. There is a resurgence of interest in this author, whose books have been reviewed many times in the last few years. Many have required second printings to keep our shelves stocked. Another author we have brought back to a new readership--often forgotten simply because he rarely used his real name when writing or creating new stories--is the master himself, Edward Stratemeyer, recognized usually when his well-known characters are mentioned such as the "Hardy Boys," Bobbsey Twins," and "Rover Boys," to mention only a few. We have republished two of his rare works of historical fiction, written under his own name --The Minute Boys of Lexington and The Minute Boys of Bunker Hill. Children who like the "Hardy Boys" will love these books and learn something of our American revolution along the way. Another favorite has been books by Oliver Optic, one of Edward Stratemeyer's own favorite authors, whom he purposely tried to emulate. Finally, a charming book from James Otis, Mary of Plymouth, in the form of a letter home to England from a young colonial girl, will leave the young reader with a sense of what it was like in Plymouth colony and the kind of people it took to tame their small part of the American wilderness.

Our books are not merely "facsimile" editions of these lost classics, but have been entirely re-typeset with an eye to making them even better teaching tools. Archaic punctuation has been updated without abridging in the least these stories, and glossaries have been added to all our fiction titles. We have added new map illustrations, created specially for our editions, where it was felt the story could be better grasped with their addition. Our hardbound books are all smythe-sewn,. All are a handy 5 1/2 by 7 1/2 inch trim size with the, exception of The Elson Readers series. The Elson Readers' trim size is 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches, while the accompanying guides are 8 1/4 x 11 inches.

As an additional aid to help parents and teachers match appropriate literature to children's reading levels Lost Classics has recently had all our titles evaluated for their "Lexile" rating. You will see a number followed by an "L" on each book's detail page; this is its Lexile measure.  This number can be compared to certain reading test scores to match students to books on their level of reading ability.  More information on the Lexile rating system can be found at http://www.lexile.com.
